Type Description

  • Type 571 Buffalo
  • Two seat deck landing, torpedo carrying and bombing landplane, a private venture to meet the requirements of Specification 21/23. A single bay, swept wing, folding biplane, it used much of the wing structure of the Type 555A Bison II. Wing spars were of spruce, with spruce and duralumin ribs, tubular steel drag struts and steel tie rod internal bracing. Ailerons were fitted to the lower mainplanes only, and only the lower mainplanes had dihedral. The fin and rudder was initially from the Bison II, though this was soon replaced by a rectangular unit, and the tailplane was adjustable for incidence. The fuselage was of tubular steel construction, with duralumin decking and fabric sides. Armament consisted of one Vickers gun on the fuselage side, firing through the propeller, and twin Lewis guns mounted on a Scarff ring in the rear cockpit. One 450 h.p. Napier Lion VA powerplant.
  • Type 572 Buffalo II
  • As Type 571 with new, all-metal wings, fitted with controllable Handley Page slats, along with Frise ailerons and dihedral on all wings. One 530 h.p. Napier Lion XIA powerplant.
