Type Description
- EAP
- The EAP (Experimental Aircraft Programme) was a technology demonstrator aircraft developed as a private venture to research technologies to be used for a future European combat aircraft, and eventually formed the basis for the multinational Eurofighter Typhoon. Structurally, it comprised three major fuselage structures; front, centre and rear. The front fuselage contained many innovative structures in Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composites and aluminium-lithium alloy, while the centre and rear fuselage structures were conventional. The right hand wing assembly, manufactured at BAe's Samlesbury plant, was a co-bonded carbon fibre composite assembly, proving new tooling and manufacturing techniques which were put to good use later on the Eurofighter programme. The left hand wing assembly was manufactured at the Corso Marche facility of Aeritalia in Turin. The foreplanes were manufactured in carbon composite at Preston/Samlesbury; detail design and manufacture of the windscreen and canopy assemblies was done by Aerostructures Hamble, in Southampton. To reduce costs, the rear fuselage and tailfin of a Tornado was used as the basis of the unit that was eventually fitted to the EAP prototype. The aircraft was fitted with a variety of advanced electronic equipment, including three CRT displays and a Head-up display. The flight controls were Hands On Throttle-And-Stick (HOTAS)-compatible and incorporated a departure prevention system. Two Turbo-Union RB199-104 afterburning turbofans
- Eurofighter/
Typhoon - European multinational twin-engine, canard delta wing, designed originally as an air-superiority fighter, produced as both a single and two seat aircraft, the two-seat variant served primarily as a trainer for incoming Typhoon pilots. Block incremental upgrades have changed the aircraft into a fully multirole fighter. The aircraft is constructed of carbon-fibre composites, glass-reinforced plastic, aluminium lithium, titanium and aluminium casting. Stealth technology features include low frontal radar cross-section, passive sensors and supercruise ability. The foreplane/delta configuration is intentionally aerodynamically unstable which provides a high level of agility (particularly at supersonic speeds), low drag and enhanced lift. The pilot controls the aircraft through a computerised digital fly-by-wire system which provides artificial stabilisation and gust elevation to give good control characteristics throughout the flight envelope. The fly-by-wire system is described as "carefree", and prevents the pilot from exceeding the permitted manoeuvre envelope. Roll control is primarily achieved by use of the ailerons. Pitch control is by operation of the canards and ailerons, because the canards disturb airflow to inner elevons. The yaw control is done by a large, single rudder.
The pilot’s control system is a voice throttle and stick system (VTAS). The stick and throttle tops house 24 fingertip controls for sensor and weapon control, defence aids management, and inflight handling. The direct voice input allows the pilot to carry out mode selection and data entry procedures using voice command. The quadruplex fly-by-wire flight control system has an automatic low-speed recovery system (ALSR) which provides the pilot with visual and audio low speed warning and will, if necessary, automatically take control of the aircraft and return to safe flight. The aircraft features an internally mounted Mauser BK-27 cannon and has 13 hard points for weapon carriage, four under each wing and five under the fuselage. An armament control system (ACS) manages weapons selection and firing and monitors weapon status. Praetorian, the aircraft’s defensive aids sub-system is accommodated within the aircraft structure and integrated with the avionics system. Early aircraft are equipped with a CAPTOR (ECR 90) multimode X-band pulse Doppler radar, developed by the Euroradar consortium. Two Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofan engines,13,000 lbf thrust each dry, 20,000 lbf with afterburner, giving ‘supercruise’ capability, which enables high-speed flight at sustained speeds of over Mach 1 without the use of afterburner.

Production is divided into multiple tranches. Tranches are a production/funding distinction, and do not imply an incremental increase in capability with each tranche. Within these tranches, aircraft are produced to a Block capability standard.
| Tranche 1 | Block 1 | Hardware Series Standard and Test Flight Instrumentation, Basic Capabilities. No refueling probe and gun, PSP1 software for initial air combat training only, no DASS, IFF, PIRATE, MIDS and some other equipment . Onecentre line tank, 2 AIM-9L or ASRAAM and 4 x AIM-120B only. |
| Block 1B/C | (through R1 upgrade from april/may 2005): electrical and software update, addition of the refueling probe and gun. | |
| Block 2 | Sensor fusion and limited DASS (chaff/flare), PIRATE as FLIR only. New weapons: AIM-9L, ASRAAM-digital, AIM-120B AMRAAM. | |
| Block 2B | Software update flight control system (full air combat capability and basic multi-role capability), striker data helmet, full DASS, PIRATE, ground collision warning system. New weapons: IRIS-T Analog | |
| Block 5 | Air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, Final Operational Capability (FOC) standard (Tranche 1 aircraft upgraded to Block 5 capability through the Retrofit 2 (R2) programme). Night vision for striker helmet, full autopilot, full PIRATE, full ground collision warning system. New Weapons: Paveway II (GBU-16, GBU-48), Rafael Litening III, Ground Mode Cannon. |
| Tranche 2 | Block 8 | Strengthened airframe. New hardware standard with new mission computer. |
| Block 8B | Final software revision SRP 4.3. | |
| Block 9 | Software upgrades. | |

Notes
- The Eurofighter is a multinational programme, managed by the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, owned by Leonardo, BAE Systems and Airbus Defense & Space. On the government side, the programme is managed by the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency (NETMA), which was set up to meet the procurement needs of the air forces from the four participating countries: Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is unique in modern combat aircraft in that there are four separate assembly lines. Each partner company assembles its own national aircraft, but builds the same parts for all aircraft (including exports); Premium AEROTEC, a wholly owned Airbus subsidiary (main centre fuselage), Airbus Spain (right wing, leading edge slats), BAE Systems (front fuselage (including foreplanes), canopy, dorsal spine, tail fin, inboard flaperons, rear fuselage section) and Leonardo (left wing, outboard flaperons, rear fuselage sections).
Final assembly:- Germany - European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) (later Airbus Military), Manching.
- Italy - Alenia (later Finmeccanica/Alenia Aermacchi, then Leonardo), Turin.
- Spain - EADS/CASA (later Airbus Military), Getafe.
- UK - BAE Systems, Warton.
