Contents
Type Description
- J/1 Autocrat
- Three seat tourer. As the Model J, fitted with 100 h.p. Blackburn Cirrus Minor 2 powerplant, the rear cabin structure revised to give more headroom and a new moulded perspex windscreen. Originally designated 'Taylorcraft Auster Mk.V Series J/1 Autocrat', this was later shortened to simply 'Auster J/1 Autocrat'.
- J/1A Autocrat
- Some J/1 Autocrats were modified into 4-seaters by fitting a bench-type rear seat.
- J/1B Aiglet
- A variant of the J/1 Autocrat originally developed for crop spraying, with stronger wing struts, which were fitted to all susequent aircraft. 130 h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 1 powerplant (with oil cooler), the increased length of which necessitated and the larger fin and rudder of the J/5B
- J/1N Alpha
- Initially conversions of J/1 Autocrats fitted with the 130 h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 1 powerplant and the larger fin and rudder of the J/5B. Later, new aircraft were built to the same standard.
- J/1S
- J/1 Autocrat converted with 145 h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 10 Mk.2-2 powerplant and the larger fin and rudder of the J/5B. The first conversion was done in Kenya, the Model number being issued by Auster’s to clear the aircraft through its certification.
- J/1U Workmaster
- Four seat agricultural development combining a strengthened J/1N fuselage and tailplane with J/5B wings and improved J/5Q ailerons, a dorsal fin extention, strengthened wing struts, heavy duty undercarriage and low pressure tyres. One 180 h.p. Lycoming O-360-A1A (prototype) or -A2A (production) powerplant. The right hand seating could be replaced with a chemical hopper if required.
- J/1W
- Three seat tourer version of J/1U. The interior of the cabin was upholstered to a high standard whilst much of the fabric was deleted from the outside fuselage and replaced by many wooden fairings. One 180 h.p. Lycoming O-360-A1A powerplant.
- J/1Y
- J/1 Autocrat converted to take 150 h.p. Lycoming O-320 powerplant and featuring an extended dorsal fin.
Seperately, the Auster designation J/1Y was a 1959 project for aircraft updated with the Lycoming engine using Auster supplied conversion kits. This conversion scheme came to nothing, so presumably these conversions were not from Auster supplied kits but still used the intended designation.

Notes
- The Blackburn Aircraft Ltd obtained a Mk.V airframe from Auster in exchange for a Cirrus Minor 2 engine, and they did their own installation. It differed from the Auster prototype in that it retained the extended perspex canopy and side windows of the Mk.V. Blackburn’s used the resultant aircraft G-AGOH for development flying of the Cirrus engine.
- Details of some of the dealers and distributers who supplied Auster aircraft (see also Notes in Auster V):
- Kingsford Smith Aviation Services:
John T. Brown, an expatriate Englishman, purchased the defunct Kingsford Smith Aviation Services at Mascot Aerodrome, Sydney. During the war he had operated a major overhaul facility at Mascot on behalf of the Department of Aircraft Production. Seeing the potential, he purchased almost all of the C.A.C. Wackett trainers being offered for sale post war, also some Oxfords. DH.82 Tiger Moths and Austers followed.
Kingsford Smith Aviation Services were to become almost solely responsible for the importation of all of Australia’s Auster population. Most were airframes only and were fitted with locally manufactured Gipsy Major engines which Brown had purchased from the Disposals Commission.
Among the Australian modifications conducted by Kingsford Smith Aviation Services were engine changes (i.e. the fitment of American higher horsepower engines to standard Auster airframes), manufacture and fitting of aerial agricultural equipment, and adaptation for banner towing. - Rollason:
W.A. Rollason was founded in 1943 by W.A. Rollason at Croydon Airport along with a sister company W.A. Rollason Limited and Rollason Aircraft Services Limited. The Rollason companies were involved in the maintenance and overhaul of a large variety of aircraft and engines, primarily based at Croydon with engine work done at Shoreham. After the war, a major source of business was the purchase of military surplus aircraft, particularly the de Havilland Tiger Moth, for re-sale in the civil market.
In 1957, the failing company was bought by Norman Jones who reorganised the business as Rollason Aircraft and Engines. The company continued to maintain and refurbish aircraft, particularly the Tiger Moth. - Southern Aircraft:
In 1935, John Coxon set up Southern Motor and Aircraft Company, which in November 1938, moved to Gatwick Airport to undertake the sale and maintenance of light aircraft and shortly afterwards, it changed its name to Southern Aircraft (Gatwick) Ltd. Post-war, Southern Aircraft (Gatwick) Ltd, purchased various surplus RAF aircraft for refurbishment and sale and undertook other engineering activities until Gatwick Airport was closed for redevelopment in 1954. - T. After a chance meeting with William Morris (later Lord Nuffield), he entered into a contract to sell twelve Morris cars a year. This was the beginning of the firm of T. Shipside Ltd.
Tom Shipside opened his Morris dealership in 1913. There was also another dealership in Loughborough and along with the Nottingham branch, was sold in the 1980s. Tom Shipside was responsible for building Tollerton Airfield in 1928. - AB Hans Osterman/AB Aero Service/Ostermans Aero:
