History

The Cloudcraft Glider Co., of Southampton, was formed in May 1930 by Roger S. Dickson to build and market the Dickson Primary single-seat primary glider. The Primary was intended to be constructed from plans which had been available via Flight magazine since the end of 1929, but the new company was now able to offer complete aircraft as well as plans and kits. In 1931 Dickson designed the Cloudcraft Phantom for Percy Michelson with distance records and a cross-channel flight in mind. Unfortunately, the aircraft was seriously damaged by vandals on the cliffs near Dover. Michelson could not afford to have it repaired, so the attempt never happened. Advertisements from July 1931 show that Cloudcraft hoped to sell the Phantom equipped as both Standard and Special models but the company closed for business at the end of 1931, so only was built.
