Type 146
Single-seat, all metal eight-gun fighter monoplane to Specification F.5/34 to meet the requirements of OR.14. It wa sa low-wing cantilever monoplane with tapering wings of moderate dihedral on the outer sections. The wings were stress skinned with aluminium with only the ailerons and tail control surfaces fabric-covered. The two sets of four .303 in Browning machine guns were housed in the outer wing sections. The undercarriage was mounted about halfway along the centre section and retracted cleanly inwards into the wing; the tailwheel was also fully retractable. It featured a monocoque fuselage, the pilot sitting well forward under a one-piece sliding canopy. One 840 h.p. Bristol Mercury IX powerplant. The Type 146 was designed to be powered by a supercharged Bristol Perseus sleeve valve radial engine, but this was not ready in time.

Type 148 Variants
Type 148
Two-seat, all metal low-wing monoplane army co-operation aircraft to Specification A.39/34 to meet the requirements of OR.18 and utilising many Type 146 components. The stressed-skin wings were of constant chord with rounded tips, and the fuselage was entirely of monocoque construction. The horizontal tail was set at the top of the fuselage and carried horn-balanced elevators; the rudder was large and pointed. All flying surfaces were fabric-covered. The wing also carried split flaps and connected wingtip slots to improve handling at the low speeds required by the specification. The wide-track main undercarriage retracted inwards into the centre-section but the tailwheel was fixed and spatted. The pilot and observer/gunner/bomb aimer sat in tandem cockpits under a continuous canopy, the rear part of which was modified when the .303 in Lewis Gun mounting was changed from Scarff ring to a pillar type. The observer could also access a prone aiming position on the floor to drop bombs from the external racks. Two .303 in machine guns were mounted in the port wing.
Initially one 840 h.p. Bristol Mercury IX powerplant, later fitted with the 905 h.p. Bristol Perseus XII.
Type 148B
Type 148 fitted with the 1050 h.p. Bristol Taurus II powerplant.
