History

Alan Bryn Bird was born in August 1946 in Staffordshire and educated at Queen Mary College, University of London, between 1965 and 1968. During the 1980’s and 90’s, while a partner Whitby and Bird (Civil Engineers), Bird built at least two, and possibly four, prototype ornithopters using more modern materials and a larger wing area than any previous ornithopter attempt. There are no reports of successful flapping flight. In March 1998 Bird retired from Whitby and Bird, becoming a consultant to be able to spend more time developing his own inventions. From 2008, he was Shareholder and Director at Erg Motor Vehicles Limited, then Director of FreeDM LIMITed from 2019.
