History
Ernest James Beresford (not Berrisford as given in Goodall and Tagg [1]) was born on 31 July 1886 in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. He had stage acts under the name of “D’Artigan” and “The Great Diavolo”, and had early associations with aviation as mechanic and assistant to "Captain" Clayton of Mansfield. In June 1910, due to injury, Clayton allowed Beresford, who probably had never flown before, to fly in his place, and the plane veered into the crowd, killing a woman, and injuring other spectators.
Beresford built a motorcycle-based aeroplane in 1912, probably intended to be used as an act in public displays. Nothing appears to have come of this. In later life he became a mechanic and electrician.
Ernest James Beresford died in April 1965 in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire.
