History

Bellwether Industries was founded in January 2019 by Kai-Tse Lin, chief operating officer, and fellow co-founder Daniel Chen to provide electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft for use in cities worldwide.

Starting in Taiwan in 2014, Lin and Chen, along with two others, began developing a hovercraft project known as Gazelle in 2015. In 2018, Bellwether Industries started work on Project Antelope – its two-seat vertical take-off and landing vehicle known as a Volar. Volar is defined as a new category of private urban aircraft which has a hidden propulsion system, a very compact profile, a lifting body and the ability to take off and land vertically. It is being tailored for city travel with deep considerations for safety and environmental impact.

In 2021 the company introduced its Oryx eVTOL aircraft, said to be a third-generation aircraft model design with a new airframe. Oryx is initially sized to carry one pilot and two passengers, but will carry up to four passengers in future, retaining the key feature of its volar hidden propulsion system.
